LEGAL AND POLICY FRAMEWORK

Since independence, the Namibian Government has pursued free-market economic principles with a view to attracting foreign direct investment. The liberal Foreign Investment Act of 1993 provides for freedom from nationalization, freedom to remit capital and profits, currency convertibility, and a process for settling disputes equitably.

Key provisions of the Foreign Investment Act include:

  • Promotes free market economy in Namibia
  • Equal treatment of local and foreign investors
  • Full protection of investment
  • No prescription of local participation
  • Repatriation of profits
  • Granting of Certificate of Status Investment (CSI)
